Start with a real buyer question
For a commercial appliance repair business, an example might be: “Who repairs commercial ovens near Nashua?” Run the question without adding your own business name. Record whether it appears, how it is described, and which pages support the response.
Then ask about your business by name. That second test checks accuracy and retrieval; it does not show whether an unfamiliar buyer would discover you. Keep those results separate.
What you can check and improve
- Access. Can the relevant crawler retrieve the public page without a sign-in or challenge? Check provider guidance and verified request logs rather than assuming all AI services work the same way.
- Discovery and indexing. Use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to inspect your pages. Crawlable links and a sitemap help discovery; submission does not guarantee indexing.
- Useful page content. Explain your service, audience, location, and contact path in readable text. Show relevant experience, examples, limitations, and answers to real buying questions.
- Accurate sources. Correct outdated information on pages and legitimate listings you control. Inspect third-party sources too, without assuming that your own page must be cited instead.
- Evidence over promises. Publish only claims you can support. A clear answer is useful to readers; a question-and-answer format is not a special AI ranking trick.

Check, improve, check again
1. Record a baseline
The AI visibility check provides three prompts: unbranded discovery, named-business description, and source verification. You run them in the service of your choice and record what you see. The tool does not query AI services or scan your website automatically.
2. Address the evidence
Start with confirmed access or indexing problems, incorrect business information, and missing service details. The business facts builder can help draft an About block, buyer answers, and structured information from facts you provide. Review its output before publication. Its llms.txt download is an optional experiment, not a substitute for public pages or a sitemap.
3. Repeat and measure
Repeat the same questions with the same tool, search mode, and location, and save each dated result. Changes may take time to be discovered, and answers can vary even when your site has not changed. Inspect citation accuracy alongside search clicks, referral visits, and qualified inquiries.
A note on expectations. Clear, accurate public information gives search and AI systems better source material. It does not guarantee inclusion or prevent incorrect answers. Permission to crawl, indexing, citations, and customer inquiries are different outcomes.

Common questions
How do I know if AI search finds my business?
Run a realistic buyer question without naming your business, with web search enabled. Record the tool, mode, location, date, answer, and cited pages. Then run a separate named-business check for accuracy. Repeat consistently; one answer is not a reliable measure of overall visibility.
Why might an AI answer describe my business incorrectly?
Missing, outdated, or conflicting sources can contribute, but retrieval and reasoning errors can also occur. Inspect the cited page, correct facts you control, and test again. A corrected source does not guarantee a corrected answer.
Do I need llms.txt or special AI schema?
There is no universal requirement. Google says special AI text files and special schema are unnecessary for its AI search features. Prioritize accessible public pages, useful content, accurate structured data where appropriate, and a sitemap. Treat llms.txt as an optional experiment.
Is AI search visibility the same as SEO?
They overlap: search discovery, clear page content, and useful evidence matter. Each provider has its own crawling and retrieval controls. Search permission, indexing, citations, and qualified visits are separate outcomes; none guarantees the next.
